Dog training advice: get him to stop jumping on people

Dogs greet people by jumping on them and showing their pleasure of the person that entered their domain. Here is dog training advice that, if implemented, will end this problem.

Training your dog not to jump on people goes against the natural behavior of a dog. We cannot scold them for doing so, but can train them in other ways to respond differently. One way is by a dog treat. Take the dog treat in your hand, and when the dog comes charging, hold out the treat and squat down and say hello. Make sure your head is not in direct contact of the dog. You are now meeting on the same level as your dog. Do this whenever you greet your dog. This will have to repeated many times.

We used to think that shoving our knee in their chest would stop them from jumping, but this way can injure your dog. Instead tell him that he is bad. If the dog continues to jump after squatting down to his level, you might want to try this next step.

Take his lead or leash, and put it under your foot. When he starts to jump, pull on it. This restricts his jumping and pulls back on him. Then have the person bend down and pet your dog.

Do this with only members of your family and friends for which you don't want the puppy jumping on. Do this at first with people you know, and then with strangers so he sees that you accept the people you know and he should also.

You are responsible for your puppy or dog, and since he might get over-excited when he sees someone trying to pet him, pulling back on the lead will cause him not to bite and most of all jump when someone reaches out towards him.
