Miami is a city rich in culture and heritage. It's not only known as a hot entertainment spot, but it has much history to be told. Here is a list of some of the sights you don't want to miss when you're visiting downtown Miami.

• Bayside Marketplace. This is a great place to check out a wide-open marketplace along the port of Miami. This is popular among people entering the port. The marketplace is set up in a Bahama style and offers all kinds of arts, crafts and trinkets that make great souvenirs for your trip. 401 Biscayne Blvd. 305-377-4091.

• Freedom Tower. This tower is a place you simply can't miss if you're in downtown Miami–literally. It was built as Miami's answer to Mediterranean architecture. The same people who built the Biltmore Hotel constructed the tower. The tower got its name because it was once home to Cuban Refugee Center, the place Cubans would come once they got off the boat from their native country. This tower is on Biscayne Blvd.

• Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. This is an entertainment center in Miami. Cultural events from around the world are exhibited and performed here. You should at least walk in and take a look inside, if you don't decide to see a show or exhibit here. This center is at 174 East Flagler Street. 305-930-1812.

• Historical Museum of Southern Florida. This is a place where you can learn all about the history of southern Florida. There are artifacts and artwork from a wide array of places throughout history showcasing the heritage and culture of Miami and the region. You can visit this museum at 101 Flagler Street. 305-375-1492.

• Rubell Family Collection. This is a art museum that showcases some of the finest contemporary art in the country. The neighborhood where this museum exists isn't the best of places to hang out, but you won't have a problem while visiting here. The Drug Enforcement Agency once called this building home. If you want to visit this contemporary art museum, you can do so on NW. 29th Street.
