Most of us have at some point in our lives experienced the pain of a headache. There are many over-the-counter prescriptions claiming to ease the hurting, and to be fair many of them do. But what lifestyle changes can we make to prevent the headache occurring? And what natural methods are effective at combating the pain?
Obviously, if you suffer from migraine, cluster or any other serious type of headache, the following information might not be altogether useful. However, for a run-of-the-mill headache caused by muscular contractions or vascular irregularities (head arteries expanding and contracting alternately) it is essential information.
First of all you must try and identify what caused the headache to occur in the first place. A certain type of food may have triggered it; indeed some are notorious for doing so. Red Wine, caffeine and smoked cheese are just a few of the culprits. Perhaps it was something in the atmosphere such as cigarette smoke or a strong scent. Or it may have occurred as a result of an action you were performing such as looking at a flickering computer screen. Once you have identified the cause, note it down in a diary and try to avoid it as much as possible in the future.
Of course, although you may cut down the frequency of headaches by doing this, there will inevitably come a time when you can’t or don’t want to avoid the ‘trigger’ situation. I personally love a glass of red wine, and although suffering an occasional headache caused by it, would never dream of eliminating it from my life! Instead I prefer to find a natural remedy for the problem.
First, try having a bath. The hot water helps to release contracted muscles, and generally lets the whole body relax.
Exercise is also an excellent idea; a brisk walk gets the circulation going again, and the fresh air can ease the pain of a headache.
Many headaches are caused by dehydration, which causes muscle contraction (cramp). So make sure you drink plenty of water every day. You should imbibe at least six large glasses per day. This will help to improve your general health as well.
You could try acupressure, acupuncture or aromatherapy. These natural methods can take away any painful pressure in the head and are surprisingly effective.
Different methods work for different people so you will have to experiment to find out which remedies work for you. Hopefully one or more of them will provide you with fast pain relief. Remember though, if your headaches become regular and/or are very painful, it is best to go and see your doctor as soon as possible.
